The best part of staying in a homestay in Kozhikode isn't just the home — it's the doorstep. From beaches and spice markets to hill drives and Malabar food trails, here are seven things to do that genuinely feel local, all within easy reach of our properties.
1. Walk Kozhikode Beach at sunset
The promenade lights up in the evening with families, peanut vendors, and the occasional street musician. It's the easiest 90 minutes you'll spend in the city.
2. Eat your way down SM Street
SM Street (Sweet Meat Street) is the city's edible history. Try Malabar biryani, halwa in every colour, and a fresh-pressed sulaimani tea. Ask your host for their favourite stall — they'll always have one.
3. Take a half-day at Kappad Beach
Kappad, 16 km north of the city, is where Vasco da Gama first landed in India. It's quieter than the main beach and ideal for a slow morning.
4. Visit the Pazhassi Raja Museum
A small but rewarding museum covering Malabar history, bronze artefacts, and murals. Good rainy-day option.
5. Day-trip to Thusharagiri Falls
About 50 km inland, Thusharagiri ("three peaks of snow" — the spray looks like snow) is a beautiful trek and waterfall combination for travellers who want a forest morning.
6. Drive up to Wayanad for an overnight
Wayanad's hills are about three hours from Kozhikode and easily worth a one-night extension. Browse our Wayanad homestays if you want to pair the coast with the hills.
7. Watch a Theyyam ritual (seasonal)
Theyyam is the ritual dance tradition of north Kerala — performed between roughly October and May in temples around Kozhikode and Kannur. Ask your homestay host; they can usually point you to a nearby performance.
Planning a longer Kerala trip?
Many guests pair Kozhikode with a hill station. Our most popular combinations are with Wayanad or Munnar. If you'd like help building an itinerary, get in touch — we'll suggest stays that flow well together.
